What a great idea to focus on one of the most under appreciated artists of the last century. He certainly deserves whatever information you can put on this site about him. I've tried to collect as many of the books that he has illustrated as I can, there are many that are hard to find. I read the letter he wrote to Marguerite Henry and I think the first question mark is "wire", and the last one is "might". I'm not sure what the other one is but it looks like "that" to me. Good luck with your research, I would really like to find an original piece of his work to buy, if you don't buy it first!
I'm so glad to find another Wesley Dennis fan! I've long admired his work. I was a friend of Marguerite Henry's. We corresponded by mail and phone from 1990 (when I was 9) until her death in 1997.
Wesley Dennis remains a favorite illustrator of mine. I'm now a published children's book illustator, myself, and I truly appreciate all the HARD WORK that goes into researching topics and subjects to draw. Mr. Dennis was a creative genius. I'll be anxious to see what all is added to this website in the future. Keep up the good work!
"It is indeed time that this great artist receives the recognition that he so deserves. As a good friend of his son, Morgan and his family, it is especially important to us that he not be forgotten. It has been a thrill for Lil and me to have had the opportunity to disburse so many of his illustrations which were drawn primarily for the Marguerite Henry books. Being involved with these drawings as both collectors and dealers has allowed us to get to know enthusiastic collectors all over the USA including you. The one thing we have learned is that all Wesley Dennis collectors are wonderful people. We hope your book about the life and times of Wesley Dennis becomes a reality in very short order
Growing up as a horse crazy girl in the 60's I adored Margurite Henry and especially Wesley Dennis's drawings!
Bravo for this site!! Glad that finally Wesley has a place devoted to his life and wonderful drawings!!
What a great artist! What wonderful illustrations! It is great to see so many all in one place! As a fan of Wesley Dennis, I salute you! Thanks for doing this! (sorry about all the exclamation points!!)
